The FCR Formula
The formula to calculate FCR is simple but powerful:
FCR = Total Feed Consumed / Total Weight Gained
- Total Feed Consumed: The total amount of feed (in pounds, kilograms, etc.) eaten by an animal or a group of animals over a specific period.
- Total Weight Gained: The total increase in body weight of the animal or group during the same period.
It's important that the units for feed consumed and weight gained are the same. The result is a ratio, so for example, an FCR of 1.5 means that 1.5 kg of feed is required to produce 1 kg of weight gain.
Practical Example
Imagine a farmer is raising a flock of 100 broiler chickens. Over a 6-week period, the flock consumes a total of 900 kg of feed. The total weight of the chickens at the end of the period is 200 kg, and their initial weight was 5 kg.
First, calculate the total weight gained:
Total Weight Gained = 200 kg (final) - 5 kg (initial) = 195 kg
Now, calculate the FCR:
FCR = 900 kg (feed) / 195 kg (weight gain) ≈ 4.62
This FCR seems high for broilers, suggesting there might be room for improvement in feed type, environment, or animal health.
