The Formula Behind the Calculation
The volume of the concrete is the volume of the hole minus the volume of the post portion that is in the hole.

This is calculated for all holes, and the result is converted into a practical number of bags.

Imagine you are setting 10 posts. Each post is a 4x4 (actual 3.5"x3.5") and you've dug 10-inch diameter holes that are 24 inches deep.
- Hole Volume (one hole) = π * (5")² * 24" ≈ 1885 cubic inches
- Post Volume (one post) = (3.5")² * 24" = 294 cubic inches
- Concrete Volume per hole = 1885 - 294 = 1591 cubic inches ≈ 0.92 cubic feet
- Total Concrete for 10 holes = 9.2 cubic feet
Since an 80lb bag yields about 0.6 cubic feet, you'd need 9.2 / 0.6 ≈ 15.3 bags. Therefore, you should purchase 16 bags.
