Using the Calculator

   • For Individual Walls: Use the "Add Wall" button to enter the length and height of each wall one by one. This is useful for irregularly shaped rooms.
2. Subtract Openings:
   • Use the "Add Door" and "Add Window" buttons to enter the dimensions of any openings in your walls.
   • The calculator will automatically subtract the area of these openings from the total wall area to give you a precise, paintable surface area.

Understanding the Formulas

Calculating Gross Wall Area

The initial calculation determines the total surface area of the walls as if they were solid planes.

• For a Rectangular Room: The perimeter of the room is calculated first (2 × Length + 2 × Width). This perimeter is then multiplied by the wall height to get the total gross wall area.

  Gross Area = (2L + 2W) × Height

• For Individual Walls: The area of each wall is calculated simply as Length × Height, and these are summed up.

Calculating Net Paintable Area

To get the area you actually need to cover, the area of all doors and windows must be subtracted from the gross area.

Area of Opening = Width × Height

Net Wall Area = Gross Wall Area - (Sum of all Door Areas + Sum of all Window Areas)

This final number is the most important for estimating materials.
