The Conversion Formulas

All capacitance conversions are based on factors of 1000 relative to the base unit, the Farad.

$$ 1 \text{ F} = 1,000 \text{ mF} = 1,000,000 \text{ µF} = 1,000,000,000 \text{ nF} = 1,000,000,000,000 \text{ pF} $$

For example, to convert from microfarads (µF) to nanofarads (nF), the formula is:

$$ \text{nF} = \text{µF} \times 1000 $$

And to convert from nanofarads (nF) to microfarads (µF):

$$ \text{µF} = \frac{\text{nF}}{1000} $$

Practical Example: Reading a Capacitor

Capacitors are often marked with a 3-digit code. Let's say a ceramic capacitor is marked with the code "104". In this common system:

  • The first two digits are the significant figures (10).
  • The third digit is the multiplier, representing the number of zeros to add (4).
  • The resulting value is in picofarads (pF).

So, "104" means 10 followed by 4 zeros, which is 100,000 pF. This value is cumbersome, so an engineer would convert it to a more standard unit like microfarads.

  • Known Value: 100,000 pF
  • Using the calculator:

  • Result: The calculator will show 0.1 µF. This is a very common capacitor value.
