(12 inches / 1 foot) or (1 foot / 12 inches)

Since the numerator and denominator are equal, the value of this fraction is 1. We can multiply any measurement by this factor to change its units without changing its value.

Applying the Method

The goal is to set up the conversion factors so that the units you *don't* want cancel out, leaving you with the units you *do* want.

Example: Convert 5 kilometers to miles.

Given conversion factors: 1 km = 1000 meters, 1 meter ≈ 3.281 feet, 1 mile = 5280 feet.

5 km   ×   (1000 m / 1 km)   ×   (3.281 ft / 1 m)   ×   (1 mi / 5280 ft)

Notice how the units cancel out:

5 km   ×   (1000 m / 1 km)   ×   (3.281 ft / 1 m)   ×   (1 mi / 5280 ft)

The only unit left is miles. Now, do the math:

(5 × 1000 × 3.281) / 5280 ≈ 3.107 miles
