About the Exact Age Calculator
The Age in Years, Months, and Days Calculator provides a precise measurement of chronological age by breaking down the total duration from a person's date of birth to a specified end date (usually today) into its constituent parts. Unlike simpler age calculators that only return the age in whole years, this tool offers a detailed and exact breakdown, which is useful for a variety of official, personal, and historical purposes.
How the Calculation Works
Calculating age in years, months, and days is more complex than it might seem due to the varying lengths of months and the occurrence of leap years. The general algorithm is as follows:
- Calculate Days: The process starts by adjusting the end day if it is smaller than the birth day. If so, a full month's worth of days is "borrowed" from the end month, and the number of days is added to the end day before subtracting the birth day. The number of days borrowed depends on the month prior to the end month.
- Calculate Months: Similarly, if the adjusted end month is smaller than the birth month, a full year (12 months) is "borrowed" from the end year. The birth month is then subtracted from the adjusted end month.
- Calculate Years: Finally, the birth year is subtracted from the adjusted end year to get the total number of full years lived.
This sequential process of borrowing ensures that the final result accurately reflects the time that has passed.
Example Calculation
Let's calculate the age of someone born on June 15, 1990, as of March 8, 2024.
- Start Date: 1990-06-15 (Year-Month-Day)
- End Date: 2024-03-08
- Days: Since 8 is less than 15, we borrow days from the previous month (February 2024, which has 29 days). New end days = 8 + 29 = 37. Now, 37 - 15 = 22 days. The end month becomes 2.
- Months: The adjusted end month is now 2, which is less than the birth month of 6. We borrow 12 months from the year 2024. New end months = 2 + 12 = 14. Now, 14 - 6 = 8 months. The end year becomes 2023.
- Years: The adjusted end year is 2023. Now, 2023 - 1990 = 33 years.
Result: The person is 33 years, 8 months, and 22 days old.
