How to Measure for Window Blinds: A Complete Guide
Ensure a perfect fit for your new window blinds by learning the correct measurement techniques for both inside and outside mounts.
Measuring for window blinds might seem straightforward, but accuracy is key to ensuring a perfect fit and optimal performance. Different mounting options require distinct measuring techniques, and overlooking crucial steps can lead to ill-fitting blinds that compromise both aesthetics and functionality. This guide will walk you through the complete process of measuring for window blinds, covering both inside and outside mounts to help you achieve a professional-looking result.
What is a Blind Size Calculator?
A Blind Size Calculator is a tool designed to simplify the process of determining the correct measurements to order for your window blinds. It takes into account the two main mounting types—inside and outside—and provides recommended dimensions based on your window's measurements.
The primary goal is to ensure a seamless fit. Too often, DIY projects involving window treatments end up with blinds that are either too small, leaving gaps, or too large, making them difficult to operate. Our calculator eliminates guesswork and provides a clear path to achieving the correct measurements.
How to Measure and Use the Calculator
Follow these steps to measure your windows and use the calculator for both inside and outside mount installations.
Step 1: Gather Your Supplies
Before you begin, make sure you have the following tools:
- Steel Measuring Tape
- Pencil and Paper
Step 2: Measure the Window
The measuring technique depends on whether you plan an "inside mount" or "outside mount".
- Inside Mount: The blinds are installed inside the window frame. The goal is to measure the exact inside dimensions.
- Outside Mount: The blinds are installed on the wall or trim above and around the window. The goal is to measure the window opening and add extra inches for better coverage.
Inside Mount:
- Measure the Width: Measure the width of the window opening at the top, middle, and bottom. Record the smallest of these three measurements, rounding down to the nearest 1/8 inch. This is your order width.
- Measure the Height: Measure the height of the window opening from the top of the inside frame to the sill in three places: left, center, and right. Record the largest of these measurements, rounding down to the nearest 1/8 inch. This is your order height.
Outside Mount:
- Measure the Width: Measure the width of the window opening and add at least 2 inches to each side (4 inches total) for overlap. This helps block light and provide privacy.
- Measure the Height: Measure the height of the window opening and add at least 2 inches to the top and bottom (4 inches total) for overlap. This ensures full coverage and light control.
Step 3: Input the Measurements into the Calculator
Once you have the measurements, input the appropriate dimensions for the "Window Opening Width (in)" and "Window Opening Height (in)" fields.
Select the "Mount Type", and the calculator will tell you the size to order.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What if my window isn’t perfectly square?
Most windows are not perfectly square. That’s why it’s important to measure in at least three different spots for both width and height, and use the smallest measurement for an inside mount.
How much overlap should I add for an outside mount?
A general recommendation is to add at least 2 inches on each side and at the top and bottom for better light control and privacy. You can increase the overlap if desired.
