Understanding "Ideal" Body Weight
The concept of an "ideal" body weight has been explored through various formulas over the years. It's important to understand that these formulas provide an estimated healthy weight range, not a single perfect number. They are based on height and gender but do not account for individual differences in body composition (like muscle vs. fat), frame size, or overall health.
Commonly Used Formulas
Our calculator uses several popular formulas to provide a range of estimates for your ideal weight.
G. J. Hamwi Formula (1964):
Men: 106 lbs for first 5' + 6 lbs for each inch over 5'.
Women: 100 lbs for first 5' + 5 lbs for each inch over 5'.
B. J. Devine Formula (1974):
Men: 50 kg + 2.3 kg for each inch over 5'.
Women: 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg for each inch over 5'.
J. D. Robinson Formula (1983):
Men: 52 kg + 1.9 kg for each inch over 5'.
Women: 49 kg + 1.7 kg for each inch over 5'.
D. R. Miller Formula (1983):
Men: 56.2 kg + 1.41 kg for each inch over 5'.
Women: 53.1 kg + 1.36 kg for each inch over 5'.
Using a Healthy BMI Range
Perhaps a more modern and widely accepted approach is to calculate a healthy weight range based on the Body Mass Index (BMI). A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered healthy for most adults.
Healthy Weight Range = BMI (18.5 to 24.9) × height(m)²
This method provides a weight range rather than a single number, which better reflects the natural diversity of healthy bodies. Our calculator also provides this range.
Practical Example
Let's calculate the ideal weight for a woman who is 5'7" (67 inches) tall using the Hamwi formula.
- Base weight for the first 5 feet (60 inches): 100 lbs.
- Additional weight for inches over 5 feet: 7 inches × 5 lbs/inch = 35 lbs.
- Total Ideal Weight: 100 lbs + 35 lbs = 135 lbs.
Different formulas will give slightly different results, which is why viewing a range is more practical.
