Important: You must use the same units for both the Real Length and the Scaled Length (e.g., both in inches or both in centimeters) unless your scale ratio already accounts for the unit change.

The Conversion Formulas

The calculations are based on simple proportions. Let the scale be represented as "A : B".

To find the scaled length from the real length:

$$ \text{Scaled Length} = \frac{\text{Real Length} \times B}{A} $$

To find the real length from the scaled length:

$$ \text{Real Length} = \frac{\text{Scaled Length} \times A}{B} $$

Practical Example: Architectural Drawing

An architect is working on a blueprint with a scale of 1:50. They have drawn a wall that measures 15 centimeters on the blueprint. They need to know the actual length of the wall in the real world.

  • Scale Ratio: 1:50 (A=1, B=50)
  • Known Scaled Length: 15 cm
  • Using the calculator:
    1. Enter "1" and "50" into the scale fields.
    2. Enter "15" into the "Scaled Length" field.
    3. Leave "Real Length" empty and click "Calculate".
