How is the Age Calculated?
The calculation is more complex than just subtracting the birth year from the current year. The calculator performs the following steps:
- Calculate Years: It first subtracts the birth year from the current year.
- Adjust for Months: It then subtracts the birth month from the current month. If the result is negative, it means your birthday hasn't happened yet this year, so it subtracts one year from the total and adds 12 to the months.
- Adjust for Days: Finally, it subtracts the birth day from the current day. If this result is negative, it subtracts one month from the total and adds the number of days in the previous month to the day count.
This detailed process ensures an accurate age down to the exact day.
Practical Example
Let's say your date of birth is August 15, 1995, and today's date is June 5, 2024.
- Years: 2024 - 1995 = 29 years.
- Months: June (6) - August (8) = -2. Since it's negative, your birthday this year hasn't passed. So, we adjust: 29 - 1 = 28 years, and 12 - 2 = 10 months.
- Days: 5 - 15 = -10. Since it's negative, we borrow from the months. The previous month (May) has 31 days. So we adjust: 10 - 1 = 9 months, and 31 - 10 = 21 days.
- Result: Your exact age is 28 years, 9 months, and 21 days.
